#242 - SaGa: Emerald Beyond
Difficulty: 4/10
I was told that it would only take 50 hrs to plat, but it took me 120 hrs lol.
Anyway, this would be the JRPG with the best combat system in these years, and probably there will be no rivals in years. The conditional tech system (interrupt, qwell, chain, and counter) and the showstopper perfectly added flavours to the timeline, encouraging the player to think thoroughly during the battle.
BUT, it seems that the development of this title is low-budgeted. The storytelling and UI design are considerably poor. There’s no full character voice, no fancy cutscenes (even worse than some visual novels), but texts only. Character art looks great, but when talking from the story level, the character building does not seem that attractive. Besides, the item and weapon tech menu look messy, especially the item trading menu.
Overall, for those who want to experience a top-level combat system, this game is highly recommended.
+ Game system & combat system design
+ Character art
+ Itoken’s music still rocks
- Everything other than above
#243 & 244 - We Love Katamari Reroll+ Royal Reverie
Difficulty: 3/10
I would like to love this game, but each time I roll the Katamari ball, it gives me pains. Seems that the ball will always hit something unexpectedly, or items cannot be sticked properly. However, once the ball becomes larger, with the controller’s vibration, it’s THE perfect game experience.
+ Music rocks as always
+ Thankfully, the platinum trophy does not require collecting all items
- Remake using Unity didn’t fix the collision issues
#245 - The Plucky Squire
Difficulty: 2/10
What a hidden gem.
Combining a 2D children’s book with a 3D outer world is a pretty clever and meta design that keeps players’ attention efficiently, although the overall gameplay seems too easy, which most time I would consider not challenging enough.
+ Combination of 2D with 3D puzzle solving
+ Characters are lovely
- After clearing the game, the game won’t allow skipping voiced conversations when returning to each chapter
#246 - Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
(PS5 Auto Pop)
#247 = Coffee Talk (PS5)
(Replay it on PS5)
#248 = Gris (PS5)
(Replay it on PS5)
#249 - Anno: Mutationem
Difficulty: 3/10
STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME.
Sony seems to have bad taste in sponsoring indie game developers. I just can’t come up with even one reason to recommend this game.
Graphics: there are lots of pixel art games that look better than this. (Coffee talk!) The overall graphic uses HD2D, like Octopath Traveller. Still, it only confuses me a lot when going up and down stairs because such rendering makes it hard to tell the character’s Z position. The Combat system is just… mediocre. Besides, after clearing the game, there aren’t many enemies left, and if you didn’t farm enough enemies for the trophy Ann ULTRA, you’ll have to run through 80% of the area (without leaving, or your gauge will reset) to grind. (Capcom’s Strider would be the best title to compare with) Trophies: some of them are heavily glitched, making the trophy hunting disgusting, because you’ll have to check the cyber neko again and again to find out which one missed causes the 24/25 in the collectable record.
#250 - The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Difficulty: 2/10
I’m glad to see these 3DS titles being re-released on PS4, but I somehow feel disappointed, especially with the second one.
It is exciting to meet celebrities such as Sherlock Holmes and Soseki Natsume, and Capcom did a great job of making every character impressive throughout the entire game. However, the new investigation mode elongates the chapter while also reducing the court battle part, which is something that I do not prefer, since the conflict during the court part is always much more fun to play.
Besides, the second title should be combined with the first title as one game instead of being separated as a “sequel”. It is more like TGAA part 2 since it solves most of my story-wise questions regarding TGAA. Overall it is not bad, but imagine having the first half released in 2015 and the second half released in 2017 - it is a little bit torturous.
+ Story and characters are fascinating as always
+ Music
- Still no voicing
- Some 3DS features are removed in the PS4 port, making some puzzles confusing
